▶ 그러면 오징어라는 이름은 어디에서 유래했을까?

정약전의 자산어보에는 `까마귀를 즐겨먹는 성질이 있어서 날마다 물위에 떠 있다가 까마귀가 이를 보고 죽은 줄 알고 쪼려 할 때 발로 감아 물속으로 끌고 들어가 잡아먹는다고 해 오적(烏賊)이라는 이름이 붙었다'고 적고 있다. 따라서 오적어(烏賊魚)라는 이름이 오징어로 변화됐을 것으로 추측하고 있며, 오징어는 `바다의 공작(孔雀)'이라고도 불리는데 이는 번식기에 수놈이 매우 아름다운 색깔로 변하기 때문이고 성숙한 오징어 수놈의 몸은 여러가지 형용하기 어려운 아름다운 색으로 변하는데 특히 교미완의 끝은 흰색과 조화가 눈에 띌 정도로 아름다워 이같은 별명이 붙었으며 옛날 일부 선비들은 오징어 먹물로 글씨를 쓰기도 했는데 이수광의 지봉유설에는 `오징어 먹물로 쓴 글씨는 해가 지나면 사라져 빈 종이가 된다. 사람을 간사하게속이는 자는 이를 이용해 속인다'고 적었으며 또 믿지 못하거나 지키지지 않는 약속을 오적어 묵계(烏賊魚墨契)라고 했다.
